What is Fascia?
Fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue system. It interpenetrates and surrounds muscles, bones, organs, nerves, blood vessels and other structures. Fascia is an uninterrupted, three dimensional web of tissue that extends from head to toe, front to back, interior to exterior, with a gel like fluid consistency that allows it to be dynamic. It is responsible for maintaining structural integrity, provides support, protection and acts as a shock absorber. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures can produce the equivalent of 2000lbs/inch squared, picture a horse standing on top of a garden hose, per area of pain in your body. Many of the standard diagnostic tools such as X-ray, Ultrasound and other body scans are unable to show the fascial tightness. Dr. Guimberteau, renowned French surgeon has publish a book that clearly shows the fascia of living persons and thus far has been able to reveal how piezoelectricity, mechanotransduction, phase transition and resonance are part of this under studied part of our bodies. What can Fascial Tightness affect?
